Daily Market Update — October 13, 2026

October 13, 2026

Welcome back — here's the plain-language breakdown of what moved markets on Tuesday, what the data says, and what it means for the platforms and systems we track inside the community. No hype, no predictions — just what changed, why it mattered, and what to watch next. Let's get into it.

The Headline

Earnings season opened and the indexes barely moved. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citi and Wells Fargo all reported, and the results pulled in different directions: the first big batch of reports mostly topped analyst expectations, but the winners and losers largely canceled each other out. The S&P 500 finished 1.79 points lower, just below the record it set last week. Chip stocks were the second story — memory names stayed under pressure after a steep overnight drop in South Korean stocks. Treasury yields eased, and the bigger event is still ahead: the September inflation report lands Wednesday morning. Takeaway: Four major banks reported on the same day and the S&P moved two hundredths of a percent. A "big news day" and a "big move day" are not the same thing, which is why you log what actually changed instead of reacting to the calendar.

U.S. Stock Market Performance

S&P 500 (SPX): 7,805.45 (-1.79 / -0.02%) Dow Jones (DJIA): 51,670.10 (-180.45 / -0.35%) Nasdaq Composite (IXIC): 27,204.38 (-41.52 / -0.15%) Russell 2000: 2,783.37 (-11.11 / -0.40%) What moved it:

  • Bank results were mixed under the surface: Goldman Sachs and Citi beat on revenue, while JPMorgan's revenue came in under estimates and Wells Fargo beat on earnings but missed on revenue and net interest income (per Investrade's market review).
  • Memory-chip stocks fell again after the selloff in South Korea, a second straight day of pressure on semiconductors.
  • The Dow gave back most of Monday's gain.
  • Small caps lagged for a second session; the Russell 2000 is down 0.8% on the week so far.

U.S. Economic Data & Major Earnings

A fuller calendar than Monday, but nothing that changed the picture ahead of the inflation report. Major events:

  • Bank earnings: JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citi and Wells Fargo reported Q3 results.
  • Other reports: UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson both reported and updated full-year guidance; Domino's beat on earnings and came in light on sales.
  • Existing home sales (September): 3.99 million annual rate, up 1.5% from August; median price $417,500.
  • NFIB Small Business Optimism (September): 97.9, down 0.8 points. What to keep on your radar this week:
  • Wednesday: the September CPI inflation report, plus results from Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, State Street and BlackRock
  • Thursday: retail sales
  • Remarks from the Fed Chair later in the week Policy reference:
  • Fed funds rate range: 3.75%–4.00% (after the 25 bp increase at the September 15–16, 2026 meeting, per the Federal Reserve's statement)
  • Next FOMC meeting: October 27–28, 2026.

Federal Reserve & Interest Rates

The bond market reopened after the holiday and the 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 5.22%, from 5.24%. New York Fed President John Williams said he sees one more rate increase as appropriate this year and does not expect another in 2027 (as reported by Investrade). The regime is unchanged: a Fed that has raised rates once this year, energy prices feeding the inflation narrative, and long yields above 5%. What to watch next:

  • The Wednesday CPI print and how yields react to it
  • Any shift in expectations heading into the October 27–28 meeting What this means for your system:
  • Your goal isn't to nail every rate move — it's to keep your system resilient whether rates hold, rise or fall.

Global Markets

The sharpest move of the day was overseas: South Korean stocks fell steeply overnight, led by memory-chip makers, and that carried into U.S. semiconductor names. Energy and geopolitics remain the other global variable. Brent crude eased to $105.69 as traders weighed the prospect of more Russian diesel supply against the Saudi–Houthi conflict. Translation: the chip story and the energy story are both global, and both reached U.S. markets today through a single sector each rather than the whole tape.

Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin (BTC-USD): ~$83,365 (5:35 PM ET mark, up about 2% from the Oct 12 daily close; rounded from publicly available data) Ethereum (ETH-USD): ~$2,509 (5:35 PM ET mark, up about 2.6% from the Oct 12 daily close; rounded from publicly available data) Key levels to watch (from the past week's observed trading range, not a forecast):

  • BTC support: ~$81k (Monday's low), then ~$80k (psych level)
  • BTC resistance: ~$83.5k–$84k zone (the weekend high)
  • ETH support: ~$2,440 zone, then ~$2,400
  • ETH resistance: ~$2,535–$2,550 zone Sentiment check:
  • Crypto recovered Monday's drop after Bitcoin briefly traded near $81,000. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a net outflow on Monday, and Ethereum is still lower on the week. Like equities, crypto is waiting on the inflation report. What this means for our platforms:
  • GoMining: keep tracking BTC output as BTC first; USD value is the variable.
  • Coinbase: a down day followed by an up day is exactly when fees and spreads add up — log the real net on every move.
  • Arrived: the reminder holds — mix faster-moving assets with slower-moving, cashflow-style exposure.

Commodities & FX

Oil (WTI, CL=F): $94.14 (+0.40 / +0.43%, Oct 13 settle); Brent $105.69 (-0.96 / -0.9%). Gold (GC=F): $4,177.30 (-13.30 / -0.32%, Oct 13 settle, December contract) USD: U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) ~102.2, down about 0.4% on the day. Why it matters:

  • WTI and Brent moved in opposite directions, so "oil" was not one story today; WTI still finished at its highest settle of the past week.
  • Gold slipped for a second session but is holding near $4,180, so hedging demand is still present under the surface.

Key Risks to Watch (Next 7 Days)

The Wednesday inflation print running hot on energy A second wave of bank results (Bank of America, Morgan Stanley) landing differently than the first Continued chip-sector pressure following the selloff in South Korea Further escalation in the Saudi–Houthi conflict or Russia–Ukraine energy strikes pushing oil higher Treasury yield spikes (10Y already above 5.2%) Crypto correlation risk (stocks + crypto moving together) Headline-driven whipsaws (false breakouts)

3 Actions to Take Today

Update/reconcile the Obsidian Metrics Financial Tracker (log earnings/withdrawals/platform activity) Review one platform's 30-day performance and note observations Before the inflation report, write down what you would do if it comes in above or below the prior reading — then compare your plan to what you actually do

Bottom Line

October 13 was a "lots of news, little movement" day: four major banks reported, the S&P 500 finished within two points of Monday's close, chips slipped again, and crypto recovered Monday's dip. The inflation report on Wednesday is the event the market is actually waiting for. The systems-first move is unchanged: keep your rails diversified (GoMining/Coinbase), keep real-asset exposure intentional (Arrived), and keep your tracker current so you're operating off data, not headlines.

Question for you: Do you decide what you'll do before a big data release, or after you see the number?
