Daily Market Update — October 14, 2026
October 14, 2026
Welcome back — here's the plain-language breakdown of what moved markets on Wednesday, what the data says, and what it means for the platforms and systems we track inside the community. No hype, no predictions — just what changed, why it mattered, and what to watch next. Let's get into it.
The Headline
The inflation report the market waited all week for came in hot, and growth stocks took the hit. September CPI rose 3.7% from a year ago, above the 3.6% economists expected and up from 3.4% in August. Gasoline did most of the work (up 9.1% on the month), but core inflation also came in a tenth above forecast. Traders quickly repriced the odds of another Fed rate increase at the October 27–28 meeting, from roughly 20% before the report to about 44–45% after. The Nasdaq fell 1.9% and the Russell 2000 1.9%, while the Dow finished nearly flat. Takeaway: Yesterday's post asked whether you decide what to do before a big data release or after. Today was that test: one number moved rate-hike odds by more than 20 points in a morning.
U.S. Stock Market Performance
S&P 500 (SPX): 7,718.94 (-86.51 / -1.11%) Dow Jones (DJIA): 51,621.48 (-48.62 / -0.09%) Nasdaq Composite (IXIC): 26,692.87 (-511.51 / -1.88%) Russell 2000: 2,729.53 (-53.84 / -1.93%) What moved it:
- The hot CPI print raised the chance of another rate increase, which hits growth and rate-sensitive stocks hardest.
- AI-related names sold off on worries about debt-funded AI spending: Oracle fell about 7%, CoreWeave about 15% and Nebius about 10%, per Yahoo Finance's live coverage.
- Chip stocks extended this week's slide, with Nvidia, Broadcom and AMD all down 3% or more.
- The Dow held up because its heavier weighting in non-tech names cushioned the drop.
- Small caps lagged again; the Russell 2000 is now down about 2.8% from last Friday's close.
U.S. Economic Data & Major Earnings
September CPI was the event of the week, and it was firmer than expected across the board. Major events:
- CPI (September): +0.6% month over month (in line), 3.7% year over year (vs 3.6% expected, 3.4% in August).
- Core CPI: +0.3% month over month (vs 0.2% expected), 2.6% year over year (vs 2.5% expected).
- Gasoline: +9.1% on the month, 34.2% higher than a year ago.
- Bank of America: Q3 profit fell 17% to $6.93 billion ($0.91 per share), weighed down by a regulatory penalty; revenue of $30.12 billion missed estimates.
- Morgan Stanley: beat on earnings ($3.03 vs $2.91 expected) and revenue ($20.34 billion vs $19.95 billion), led by a 41% jump in equities trading revenue, but the shares still fell about 3%. What to keep on your radar this week:
- Thursday: retail sales
- Remarks from the Fed Chair later in the week
- More Q3 earnings, especially from the large AI and chip names that sold off today Policy reference:
- Fed funds rate range: 3.75%–4.00% (after the 25 bp increase at the September 15–16, 2026 meeting, per the Federal Reserve's statement)
- Next FOMC meeting: October 27–28, 2026.
Federal Reserve & Interest Rates
The rate picture shifted today. Before the report, futures markets priced roughly a 1-in-5 chance of a quarter-point increase on October 28; afterward, CME data cited by Yahoo Finance showed about 44%. Economists are split: Capital Economics described the core surprise as broad-based, while other coverage noted many traders still lean toward December rather than back-to-back increases. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped above 5.3% right after the release, then gave the move back and finished around 5.19%, slightly lower than Tuesday. What to watch next:
- Fed speakers between now and the October 27–28 meeting
- Whether the 10-year holds above 5% after this week's data What this means for your system:
- Your goal isn't to nail every rate move — it's to keep your system resilient whether rates hold, rise or fall.
Global Markets
European and Asian closes: not pulled this pass. The global variable that did reach U.S. markets is energy: Brent crude held near $106 as tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and Middle East shipping routes kept a floor under oil. That same energy story is what showed up in the U.S. inflation number. The U.S. Dollar Index climbed back to about 102.5 as traders priced in a higher chance of a rate increase.
Cryptocurrency
Bitcoin (BTC-USD): ~$81,809 (5:35 PM ET mark, down about 1.5% from the Oct 13 daily close; rounded from publicly available data) Ethereum (ETH-USD): ~$2,424 (5:35 PM ET mark, down about 2.9% from the Oct 13 daily close; rounded from publicly available data) Key levels to watch (from the past week's observed trading range, not a forecast):
- BTC support: ~$81k (Monday's low), then ~$80k (psych level)
- BTC resistance: ~$83.5k–$84k zone (the weekend high)
- ETH support: ~$2,400 zone, then ~$2,350
- ETH resistance: ~$2,500–$2,535 zone Sentiment check:
- Crypto gave back Tuesday's recovery after the inflation report, trading in step with growth stocks as yields and the dollar firmed. Bitcoin is now sitting just above Monday's low, and Ethereum is below the $2,440 zone it held earlier in the week. What this means for our platforms:
- GoMining: keep tracking BTC output as BTC first; USD value is the variable.
- Coinbase: a data-driven down day is when fees and spreads quietly add up — log the real net on every move.
- Arrived: the reminder holds — mix faster-moving assets with slower-moving, cashflow-style exposure.
Commodities & FX
Oil (WTI, CL=F): $95.17 (+1.03 / +1.09%, Oct 14 close); Brent $106.06 (+0.37 / +0.35%). Gold (GC=F): $4,127.30 (-50.00 / -1.20%, Oct 14 close, December contract) USD: U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) ~102.55, up about 0.4% on the day. Why it matters:
- WTI rose for a third straight session and closed at its highest level of the past week, which is the same energy pressure that drove today's inflation print.
- Gold fell for a third session as the dollar firmed and rate-hike odds rose; it is now about $90 below last Friday's close.
Key Risks to Watch (Next 7 Days)
A rate increase at the October 27–28 meeting becoming the base case Further gains in oil feeding the next inflation reading Continued selling in AI and chip stocks tied to concerns over debt-funded spending Thursday's retail sales showing whether consumers are absorbing higher prices Treasury yield spikes (10Y already near 5.2%, briefly above 5.3% today) Crypto correlation risk (stocks + crypto moving together) Headline-driven whipsaws (false breakouts)
3 Actions to Take Today
Update/reconcile the Obsidian Metrics Financial Tracker (log earnings/withdrawals/platform activity) Review one platform's 30-day performance and note observations Compare what you planned before the inflation report with what you actually did today, and write down one difference
Bottom Line
October 14 was an "inflation day": September CPI came in at 3.7% with core firmer than expected, rate-hike odds for the October meeting roughly doubled, the Nasdaq and small caps each fell nearly 2%, and Bitcoin, Ethereum and gold all slipped while oil kept climbing. The systems-first move is unchanged: keep your rails diversified (GoMining/Coinbase), keep real-asset exposure intentional (Arrived), and keep your tracker current so you're operating off data, not headlines.
Question for you: When a single report moves the market like today's did, do you change anything in your system, or do you log it and stay the course?
